Where I’m Going, You’re Welcome to Come

By Patrick · On March 4, 2014

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” — Susan Sontag

Sometimes I’ll get asked, “Where do you want to travel?”

That question is hard to answer.

It might be better to ask, “Where don’t you want to travel?”

Our Earth is huge. It’s more than I can ever hope to see in a lifetime, even if I set out to traverse every inch of it. But I intend to make a pretty good dent before I go. But instead of giving a single answer, let me tell you of the places that haunt my dreams.

I want to camp at Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. I want to lay on the ground and stare at the Milky Way sprinkled across the night sky. And then I want to see it rain, as the flat turns into the world’s largest mirror, reflecting the sky back at itself, so that those who are able to walk its surface don’t know the difference between the endless blue and the ground itself.

I want to wake up bathed in the morning light of a hidden alcove somewhere on  beautiful Koh Lanta, to smell the sea breeze as I rise for the day. I want to spend my days hidden away from civilization and the world, to write as I please, when I please, and simply enjoy existing.

I want to get lost in the magic and chaos of Tokyo at night, where the language flows like water and the party never ends.

I can go on and on about the places I want to go. I want to spend nights under the glow of the aurora borealis. I want to feel the heat on my face of a hundred volcanoes, to feel the bone-chilling wind of the poles. To breathe the muggy air of Rio and have my lips chapped by the prairie winds of Patagonia.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all, as Helen Keller said. I’m inclined to agree.

But the key is, these destinations aren’t just dreams for me. They’re the future.

And I invite you to follow along.
